You feel like you’ve been waiting forever for your home to heat up. You’ve wrapped yourself in a warm blanket, found your slippers, and you’re considering a hot cup of coffee. What could be taking it so long?
Many homeowners have found themselves in a similar situation. There are many parts to your heater, and if they aren’t all working properly, you and your family may be feeling that awful winter chill. If your heater isn’t producing heat, there are a few common problems that may be the cause. If you are confident enough in your heater diagnosis skills, here are some of the glitches to look for:
- Your Thermostat Isn’t Working Properly – This may include being set to a low setting or turned off. It seems silly, but this is a common problem homeowners face. Sometimes we forget to actually turn the heat back on. If that is not the problem, you may have a broken thermostat or faulty wiring, which would likely require the help of a heating technician.
- Circuit Breaker is Tripped or Blown – This is also a fairly common occurrence. Sometimes when winter hits hard, our system is overloaded and the breaker is tripped.
- Pilot Light is Out – For older systems or those with non-electric ignition systems, this happens quite often. You can easily check for the pilot light under your furnace or you can call a trained technician to assist you.
- Failure in the Ignition System – If you own a heater with an electric ignition system and you have checked for some of the other common problems, your ignition may be having trouble. You can try to troubleshoot the system, but we recommend calling a technician so he/she can check your system and confirm that this is the problem.
