Prepping Your Heater System for WinterThe most important thing you need to do for you and your family before winter arrives is to ensure that your heater system is safe, operational and as energy efficient as possible. When that first chilly day hits, you don’t want to turn your furnace on to discover that it’s not working.

No doubt about it, the best thing to avoid this is to call a HVAC company and have them come and inspect your heater. During the inspection, the technician will also clean your furnace, check for unhealthy gases and leaks, and make sure everything is operational. It would also be a good idea to have them clean the furnace ducts while they are there.

On top of this, there are some things you can do yourself:

  •  Change the filter if it’s dirty. If it looks okay, you can leave it.
  • During the warm months, stock up on filters. In the summer, you can often find bargains on filters and other items.
  • Remove any things you have stored near the heater, especially anything that can catch fire. If you have any household items sitting on top or in front of the return vents and ducts, remove them.
  • If your furnace is oil-fired, contact your oil company and have them fill up the tank. Heating oil is cheaper to buy in the warm months than it is in the middle of January.
