Fall temperatures are approaching quickly, and we’re already getting a taste of crisp air and nice cool breezes. This means that we we’ll soon get a break from air conditioning, and before we know it, our heating systems will be on. However, it’s important to remember to winterize your AC by performing a few simple seasonal shutdown tasks.
- Power off the unit. This is a precautionary step to ensure it doesn’t turn on accidentally during the winter.
- Call an air conditioning technician to drain the evaporator of any condensation. At the bottom of the unit, there’s a drain that will allow him/her to empty any buildup of moisture. This is very important because moisture can lead to rust and corrosion, as well as mold and mildew growth.
- Clean the area around the outdoor unit. Rake the ground, and remove any debris, dirt and leaves that may be stuck in the fan. You may want to consider getting a breathable cover, but if you periodically clean around the unit during winter, this is not necessary.
- Replace the filters. Regularly changed filters can make a world of difference – lower energy costs and better indoor air quality. Don’t forget to replace them every 3 months through fall and winter. Now is a good time to stock up on air conditioning filters because many stores cut their costs at this time of year.
